Getting Started with CshFlow

Welcome! Let's get you set up with CshFlow so you can see your cash flow at a glance.

Prerequisites

  • A modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • Banking CSV files from your financial institution
  • Your current bank balance

Step 1: Create Your Account

Navigate to CshFlow and sign in:

  1. Go to https://cshflow.co
  2. Click "Sign In" and choose your preferred authentication method
  3. You'll be guided through onboarding to get your account set up

Your data is private and secure — stored only in your account.

Step 2: Upload Your Banking CSV

Tell CshFlow about your transactions:

  1. During onboarding, click the "Upload CSV" button or drag-and-drop your file
  2. Select one or more CSV files from your bank (you can upload multiple months)
  3. CshFlow will parse and deduplicate your transactions automatically

Supported CSV Format

CshFlow expects Canadian banking CSV files with these columns:

  • Account Type, Account Number
  • Transaction Date
  • Description 1, Description 2
  • CAD$ amount, USD$ amount

If your bank uses a different format, CshFlow will do its best to adapt.

Step 3: Set Your Current Balance

This is your financial starting point:

  1. Check your banking app for your actual current balance
  2. Enter it in CshFlow
  3. Click "Confirm"

Safety First

CshFlow uses conservative rounding. Your available spending room is always rounded down to keep you safe.

Step 4: Review Your Patterns

After uploading your transactions, CshFlow automatically detects:

  • Recurring expenses (subscriptions, regular bills)
  • Income patterns (your paychecks)
  • Spending by vendor (where your money goes)

Review these in the Smart Inbox to confirm or adjust them. This helps CshFlow forecast your cash flow accurately.

Step 5: Explore Your Calendar

Now you can see your cash flow at a glance:

Calendar View

The calendar is your command center. Each day shows:

  • Income (in green) - money coming in
  • Expenses (in red) - money going out
  • Net change - what's left over

Click any day to see the transactions for that date.

Monthly Metrics

At the top of the calendar:

  • Total income this month
  • Total expenses this month
  • Net cash flow (income minus expenses)

Your Spending Room

Know exactly how much you can safely spend:

  • Until month-end - safe spending until the end of the month
  • Until next income - safe spending until your next paycheck

Next Steps

Explore these features:

  • Calendar - See your cash flow at a glance
  • Inbox - Review and confirm detected patterns
  • Transactions - Browse and organize all your transactions
  • Settings - Customize income patterns and spending preferences

Common Questions

What if I don't upload past transactions?

No problem! You can start from today and build up your transaction history over time. CshFlow will learn your patterns as you go.

Can I edit or delete transactions?

Yes! Click on any transaction in the calendar to open the detail view. You can:

  • Edit vendor names and categories
  • Add notes for your reference
  • Delete transactions if needed
  • Mark special transactions (transfers, debt facility income, etc.)

Why does my spending room seem different from my balance?

CshFlow uses conservative rounding to keep you safe:

  • Available spending is rounded DOWN (safer for you)
  • Committed expenses are rounded UP (cautious)
  • See Conservative Rounding for details

How does CshFlow detect my paychecks?

CshFlow looks for regular income patterns in your transactions. Once you confirm a paycheck pattern in the inbox, CshFlow will:

  • Track when you expect your next payment
  • Use it to calculate your "safe to spend until next income" amount
  • Learn from any adjustments you make

Troubleshooting

CSV Won't Parse

Try this:

  1. Open the CSV in Excel or Numbers to verify it's not corrupted
  2. Check that all expected columns are present
  3. Try re-downloading the CSV from your bank
  4. Contact support if issues persist

Patterns Not Detected

Possible reasons:

  • You need at least a few months of transaction history for patterns to emerge
  • Your recurring expenses might not be regular enough to detect
  • You can always manually add income or expense patterns in Settings
